Program
Description
The Engineering Graphics
Technology program at NETC prepares individuals to measure,
create and draw plans for mechanical parts and electrical
systems. Drafters prepare technical drawings and plans used
by production and construction workers to build manufactured
products or structures. Many have added computer-aided
drafting (CAD) systems to prepare drawings. NETC has
numerous CAD computer work stations for students to use to
create drawings. These systems enable drafters to make
revisions faster and to develop variations of a design,
which saves time and money.
Career
Options
The key occupation for
engineering graphics graduates is drafting. Once individuals
enter the workforce, they can specialize their drafting
skills for certain areas such as mechanical drafting, tool
design, surveying, landscape architecture or architecture.
Engineering graphics
technology at NETC provides several career choices. Careers
pertaining to engineering graphics include drafter,
architect, surveyor, electrical drafter, electronic, civil
or mechanical drafter, tracer, detailer, industrial and tool
designer.
Job Outlook
Drafters held about 283,000
jobs in 1998. In South Carolina, industrial designers held
3,325 jobs in 1998; that rate is expected to increase by
more than 13 percent by 2006. More than 35 percent of all
drafters worked in engineering and architectural services.
About 29 percent worked in manufacturing industries. The
needs of local industries determine the areas of specialized
drafting skills.
