For Lora Chavis, learning is exciting. As an instructor, she hopes to share that excitement for learning with her students and empower them with knowledge and confidence to work toward their personal life goals. Because she was once an NETC student facing the obstacles that come with also being a working single parent, she can relate well to students who are facing struggles while going to college. It is her hope that students will think, “If Mrs. Chavis was able to do it, I can do it, too.”
For Mrs. Chavis, family and faith are very important. She enjoys any time she can spend with her family, especially her grandchildren and extended family. She teaches Sunday school and works with a senior citizen group through her church. She is also a strong supporter of NETC and its mission to educate and change people's lives.
Mrs. Chavis earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Francis Marion University. She is a licensed professional counselor and works part time in a private counseling practice. She has been counseling in various settings including hospice, alcohol and drug, and mental health since May 1993. She served as an adjunct faculty member at Spartanburg Community College and Limestone College. She has been a full-time instructor at NETC since 2006.
Students in Mrs. Chavis’ class will learn to question everything, to be curious and not take things at face value. They will learn to have a greater acceptance of themselves and others. Students will learn concepts, theories and terminology of psychology, but most of all, they will gain an appreciation for connecting with an idea, sharing it with others and applying what they’ve learned to their lives.
