A Legacy Woven in Lives: Dr. Melisa Johnson Retires After 32 Years in Education

Her story at NETC is one that few can claim. She arrived first as a student, and through dedication, hard work, and a genuine love of learning, she grew into one of the college's most respected leaders. Along the way, she served as adjunct instructor, full-time faculty, Assistant Dean, and most recently, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Early Care and Education. It is a career arc that speaks not only to her professional accomplishments, but to the kind of person she is.

In a heartfelt note to her colleagues, Dr. Johnson reflected on the journey with characteristic grace. "Every ending opens the door to a new beginning," she wrote, "and true fulfillment comes from the impact we leave on others." She offered her thanks for the relationships, the support, and the shared sense of purpose that defined her time at the college, and made clear that while she is leaving as a colleague, she is not leaving as a friend.

She closed her message with a quote from the ancient Athenian statesman Pericles that may as well have been written with her in mind: "What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others."

For the students she taught, the faculty she mentored, and the staff she led, those words ring true. Dr. Melisa Johnson's legacy at NETC is not found in a title or a plaque. It is found in the countless lives she touched along the way.

The NETC community wishes her all the best in this well-earned next chapter.
