NETC: A decade of giving to United Way

Northeastern Technical College employees have opened up their hearts (and wallets) this year, pledging to contribute $6,761 to the United Way of Chesterfield County. This year will mark the tenth year of United Way giving for NETC employees, bringing the total to more than $24,000 donated over the past 10 years.

"Over the past decade, NETC has been one of our largest contributors," said United Way of Chesterfield County's Director of Resource Development, Catherine Thompson. "The staff is very 'tuned into' the needs within the community and are committed to helping where they can."

All the money raised by the United Way of Chesterfield County stays in Chesterfield County assisting organizations such as Hospice of Chesterfield County, volunteer first responders, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Mercy in Me Free Medical Clinic and many more nonprofit agencies. The United Way's mission is to enhance the economic and social well being of the community through the collection and allocation of funds and resources based on need.

"This campaign is a true testimony to how a little can go a long way, Thompson continued. "Each person who gives through the United Way is making an unbelievable difference in the lives of those in the community."

NETC joined the United Way campaign in 2005, raising $791 for the organization. Since then, the amount contributed by college employees has steadily increased each year.

"We make donating to the United Way very easy," said Cathy Pelfrey, who has spearheaded the campaign for NETC. "We ask our college employees to pledge whatever they can afford to the United Way, and those dollars are deducted from employee paychecks before taxes. It is a great way to help others and give back to the community."

"If you give $1 a week, you could provide two days of operating the 24-hour toll free crisis line for sexual assault or domestic violence victims," said UW Executive Director Margaret Mitchell. "If you give $10 a week, you could provide annual required safety training for two volunteer firemen."

The United Way partners with many workplaces such as NETC to support its yearly fundraising campaign. Any business or industry that would like to support the United Way's mission through a similar partnership should call the Catherine Thompson, Director of Resource Development, in the United Way office at (843) 623-5266.
