NETC Instructor Recognized as Professor of the Year

Biology instructor Marie Mackey of Bennettsville has received the Governor's Distinguished Professor of the Year award for Northeastern Technical College.

Mackey, who also serves as assistant dean of science, was nominated for the award by faculty colleagues and the college administration for her teaching excellence and commitment to higher education.

Mackey earned a Bachelor of Science in science teaching (physical sciences) and a Master of Education in secondary education (natural sciences) from Clemson University. She has taken postgraduate courses at the University of South Carolina, Francis Marion University and Clemson University.

Mackey has been a full-time instructor at NETC for more than 21 years and worked as an adjunct for 3 years prior to that.

"Working at NETC has been a great experience for me," Mackey said. "Many of our students are nontraditional students who see education as an opportunity and work very hard to achieve their goals. While I teach them science and how it affects their everyday activities in the workplace, they in turn teach me about how important education is to all aspects of life. The rewards of teaching at a two-year college are that I encounter these students later in their careers or with their families in the community, and I can see how they have succeeded and contributed to our community professionally and personally."
