NETC graduates inaugural class of Medical Assistants

After twelve months of intensive classroom learning and clinical training, the first class of Northeastern Technical College's Medical Assistants have graduated and are ready to take their places in the local workforce.

NETC's Medical Assistant Training course is a new program being offered through the Department of Continuing Education, preparing students to sit and test for certification to become a Certified Medical Assistant through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) which is a nationally recognized credentialing agency. Students successfully completing the exam will be recognized as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) which is portable within the US.

Medical Assistant graduates include Teresa Adkins of Bennettsville, Shonta Allen of Chesterfield, Franklin "Van" Carlisle of McColl, Brenda "Nikki" Childers of Bennettsville, Lakeisha Dixon of Chesterfield, Wanda Drake of Cheraw, Toni Farrier-Johnson of Dillon, Elisha Harrington of McColl, Kim Hayes of Bennettsville, Deloras Jackson of Patrick, Renisha Jefferson of Cheraw, Brittany Langley of Pageland, Shelia Marley of Cheraw, Shae McDuffie of Bennettsville, Teresa Norris of Cheraw, Priscilla Price of Hartsville, Kimberly Walden of Pageland, Shannan Watts of Cheraw, and Lakeither Young of Hartsville.

Medical assistants are necessary in many health care settings, working side by side with doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. CMA's are trained to manage the front desk in a medical office setting, file insurance claims, take patient histories, and assist doctors with minor office procedures, lab collection and processing.

Students considering enrollment in NETC's Medical Assistant (MA) program must have a high school diploma or GED and score a level four or higher on the WorkKeys: "Reading For Information," "Applied Math," and "Locating Information" assessment tests.

Currently, a second group of eager students are in training. For information about the next certified medical assistant program, contact Bob Schultz from NETC's Division of Continuing Education at 843-921-6925 or toll free 800- 921-7399. Options are available for students seeking financial aid, and individuals receiving SNAP benefits may be eligible for free tuition.
