NETC nursing assistant program comes to Dillon

Northeastern Technical College is bringing their popular nursing assistant program to Dillon beginning April due to high demand for the program in the area.  The program will also include options for nursing assistants to train as a ward clerk/unit secretary, home health aide and/or phlebotomist to help increase their level of employability.

"This nursing assistant program has been so popular at the Cheraw campus, that we have classes scheduled through September," said Dr. Robert Schultz, Continuing Education Allied Health Program Manager.   "There is a growing demand for certified nursing assistants (CNA) throughout the nation and an even higher demand for those who are cross trained in other medical fields."

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job growth for nursing assistants in general is expected to be at a rate of 21% over the next decade. This projected growth is faster than the average for all occupations and expected to create 312,200 new positions by 2022, with the best job opportunities in the areas of community rehabilitation and home health services.

The Nursing Assistant program consists of 80 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of supervised clinical training and is offered by the college's division of continuing education. The program will be offered during the evening at Dillon County ATEC. Beginning in April the evening class will last for approximately 12 to 15 weeks.

Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant course, graduates will acquire the academic and practical skills necessary to successfully complete the Nursing Assistant Certification Exam. This exam is required by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control for employment as nurse aides and nursing assistant certification (CNA).

The ward clerk/unit secretary program lasts approximately 6-weeks, and the phlebotomy program consisting of 12 weeks and 100 clinical hours lasts approximately six months.  Home Health Aide requires an additional 30 hours along with a CNA certificate. Interested individuals can choose to enroll in each of the programs separately or combine certification programs. Class schedules will be advertised soon.

Registration for these classes is completed by filling out a continuing education registration form and paying the tuition fee. The college is also participating in the SNAP-2-WORK scholarship program where Food Stamp recipients are eligible for educational financial assistants. Questions may be directed to the office of continuing education, located in Hampton Hall on the Cheraw campus (Building 200) Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
