Students needing financial aid for Fall should start applying now

Even though spring has just arrived, students who are planning to enroll in the fall semester at Northeastern Technical College (NETC) should act soon and apply for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form available on the college website.

"It's important to start this process as early as possible," said Sheryll Marshall, coordinator of financial assistance at NETC.  "Not only are students more likely to get the money they need, this also better ensures they can start their education on time."

Even through the FAFSA process may seem intimidating to some, Marshall explained that the steps to apply are fairly simple.  The financial aid application process can be completed online, and there are convenient tools available, such as the IRS Data Retrieval tool, which will automatically import tax information from the IRS. Once students have completed the application and submitted the appropriate forms, the most difficult part of the process is complete.

"It's very easy to get started in college," she said. "After you apply to NETC, which you can do online, through the mail or in person, you can start the financial aid process.  If you have the information you need and choose to complete the application online, the process can take less than 30 minutes."

Students who choose to apply for Financial Assistance through the mail can obtain an application by either printing a PDF version of the application form from www.fafsa.gov (found under "FAFSA Filing Options") or requesting a paper application by calling 1-800-433-3243 or from the office of student financial assistance at NETC.  A mailed application normally takes four weeks to process after it has been received.

To begin the application process, NETC's office of student financial assistance offers the following steps:

Have the information required in order to complete the FAFSA.  Whether students choose to apply online, or through the mail, information from the following documents will be requested:

  • Social Security cardDriver's license (if any)
  • Permanent Resident Receipt Card (if applicable)
  • W-2 forms and other 2013 records of money earned
  • 2013 income tax returnRecords of child support paid
  • Records of taxable earnings from Federal Work-Study or other need-based work programs
  • Records of student grant, scholarship and fellowship aid, including AmeriCorps awards, that was included in your (or your parents')
  • AGICurrent stock, bond, and other investment records
  • Current business and farm records
  • Current bank statements.
  1. For individuals filing electronically, ensure that you have a PIN#.  Dependent students must have a PIN for themselves and their parents.  Pin numbers can be obtained by going to www.fafsa.gov, clicking on "PIN Site" tab and following steps to request a PIN #.  This number will be used to electronically sign the FAFSA application online.
  2. Begin the FAFSA Application process.  Obtain a paper application or file electronically by visiting www.fafsa.gov and clicking on "Start a New FAFSA" for new applicants or "Login" for returning students.  Once into the portal, students should follow the step-by step process.  At the end of the application, after students click "Submit FAFSA Now,"  a confirmation page will appear acknowledging that the application was successfully received by the Federal Student Aid Program. Students should ensure that college code 007602 (Northeastern TEC) is used so NETC receives FAFSA results.
  3. Applicants will receive a letter within two weeks of the electronic application filing.  If any additional information is needed for the application, a notice will be mailed with directions.  If students do not receive any mail regarding their financial aid prior to the week before registration, they should check with the Financial Aid Office.  Returning students will find their award letter in the Student Portal of the college website under the Financial Aid tab.
  4. Students interested in applying for a job under the Federal College Work-Study Program should complete a work-study application (available upon request from the Financial Aid Office or on our college website: www.netc.edu.) Click on Admissions, then Financial Aid and then on FA Forms.
  5. Students interested in applying for a scholarship should complete the NETC General Scholarship Application.  All available scholarships available can be found on our college website.  Just click on Admissions, then Financial Aid and Other Aid.
