Take Flight at NETC’s Camp Exploration

Program Logo

Camp Exploration, a summer day camp for rising seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth graders, will be held on the Cheraw campus of Northeastern Technical College this summer beginning July 17 through July 21.

The theme of the camp is "Take Flight" and the program will guide campers through a diverse schedule of workshops, interactive learning activities, career exploration, and leadership activities related to advanced manufacturing, engineering, science and technology. College faculty will lead workshops, while students are chaperoned by qualified middle school and high school.

"We are excited to introduce the cutting-edge technology of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) using drones to Camp Exploration this year," said Tammy Morrell, Continuing Education Program Manager. "By the end of the week, campers will understand this new technology, and look forward to the day when a drone can deliver a pizza to our doorsteps."

During the course of the week, campers will learn about drone safety, problem solving skills, and team building as they build their own drones. Campers will also learn how drones are used, and the future of drone use in military, business, and industry. Campers will also learn how to fly using a flight simulator, and the week will conclude with campers demonstrating their skills as they watch their drone fly.

"Our summer camps are designed to provide campers with a visual perspective into possible career opportunities that they might not know about," Morrell added. "Campers will use the same technologies our college students use in the classroom, by building drones and learning to work in a team environment."

The camp will be from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., July 17 through July 21.

Camp Exploration has limited openings for students. Participants must apply by July 12, 2017.
Space is on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of the camp is $79.00 and tuition must be paid to reserve a slot in the camp.

For information about the program, and/or the application process, look for Camp Exploration under Academic Pathways on www.netc.edu or click here. You can download application to bring or mail, with payment, to the NETC Department of Continuing Education. For questions, call 843-921-6924.

Camp Exploration is offered in partnership between Northeastern Technical College and the SC Department of Commerce. The goal of the program is to inspire, support and prepare students for success in the workplace while helping to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians.
