Keep Copies of Tax Filing Documents For Financial Aid Purposes

In recognition of February as Financial Aid Awareness Month, Northeastern Technical College is offering information on the financial aid process to currently enrolled students as well as students and parents who are planning to file for financial aid for the summer or fall semesters.

“Most importantly, as soon as students or parents file their 2006 tax forms, they need to make sure they keep actual copies of their federal tax return, schedules and W-2 forms,” Sheryll Marshall, coordinator of financial assistance said.  “They will need these documents to complete the financial process for the 2007 fall semester.”

This is especially important to remember, she said, because many people do their taxes online, or with tax preparation software and only retain a receipt showing they filed electronically. 

“Any students who are planning to apply for assistance for the first time to start college this summer session will also need to present the same documents from their 2005 tax return,” she added.  “Having this information when you come to our office will speed up the process.”

Marshall almost reminds students and parents to make sure tax forms are filed correctly because the financial aid office is obligated to know the following information:

1. Whether or not an individual was required to file a tax return
2. What an individual’s correct filing status  should be
3. That an individual cannot be claimed as an exemption by more than one person.

Most awards are issued on a first come, first serve basis so Marshall encourages students to make the time to come by the office and apply as soon as possible. The office is open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm Monday through Thursday.
