English as a Second Language Offered at NETC
Tami Winstead, of Chesterfield, was raised by her parents to help people and now she’s excited to have the opportunity to do this by teaching an English as a Second Language (ESL) class at Northeastern Technical College.
Begininng on April 16, Winstead will teach the course designed to help non-English-speaking residents learn the English language.
“I love to help people and I’ll use this class to help people learn the language so they can communicate on the job, or get a job,” she said.
Students enrolled in this course, which is offered by the college’s division of continuing education, will have the opportunity to achieve a basic level of conversational English so they can live and work in an English-speaking society.
The course is a six-week course that meets one night a week on Mondays beginning April 16. Course times are from 6:30 – 9:30pm on Northeastern Technical College’s campus in Cheraw. The cost is $89 and interested parties should call the division of continuing education at 843-921-6923 or 843-921-6924 for more information.
Winstead was born in Los Angeles but was raised in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico where she was educated through high school. She is fluent in Spanish and serves as a translator for the Chesterfield County office of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and the Chesterfield County Board of Disabilities. She also offers freelance Spanish to English, English to Spanish translation services.
Though Winstead’s expertise is in the Spanish language, any non-English speaking individuals, or their employers, are encouraged to sign up for the course.
“If someone wants to take this opportunity to learn the language, then I’ll do my best to help them,” she said.
