Learn to Draw House Plans at NETC
Beginning this summer, Northeastern Technical College will offer a class on drawing structural floor plans for single-story residential dwellings.
The class, Architectural Graphics I (AET 110), will be held on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. beginning Wednesday, May 30.
The class is being offered in response to student and public interest.
“A lot of our students ask for a class to learn how to draw house plans,” said Ralph Toler, lead instructor in the drafting and industrial maintenance departments at Northeastern Technical College. “I also receive calls all the time from individuals in the community who are interested in a class like this, or who want our students to draw plans for them.”
Students who enroll in AET 110 will receive an introduction to the skills of architectural manual drafting and will also have the opportunity to walk away from the course with house plans.
“They’ll gain the knowledge to draw the rooms and floor plan that will be sufficient to take to a builder,” he said. “The plans will also be sufficient to take to a bank to get a new construction loan.”
However, the plans will not be sufficient to pass city and county inspections, or to guide a general contractor. Those avenues will require a plan created by a licensed architect, explained Toler.
Anyone interested in learning how to draw house plan drafts, or pursing a degree in engineering graphics should sign up for the course. This course can also be an elective for any student enrolled in NETC programs such as drafting, general technology and others.
They only prerequisite for the course are a basic knowledge of blue print reading. Students who have not had blueprint reading can enroll in Print Reading and Sketching (EGT 106), which will also be offered this summer at the college.
Depending on interest and enrollment, AET 110 may become the first course offered in a series of architectural classes that will enable students to earn a certificate in architectural design.
