Success Skills Classes Start October 23 for Single Parents, Homemakers and Nontraditional Career Seekers

Single parents, homemakers and nontraditional career seekers who are interested in learning about the skills needed to start a new career, to manage life more effectively, or to better choose a job that fits their interests, abilities, and talents, should enroll in Northeastern Technical College’s upcoming Success Skills Classes.  The classes are free and are being held from October 23 through October 26 on the college’s campus in Cheraw.

These classes are designed to provide participants with counseling and information about potential career paths, job fields, and an opportunity to visit and speak with faculty members and students in all of NETC’s instructional areas.

Classes are open to single parents, homemakers and individuals who are interested in nontraditional careers.  Single parents must be unmarried, or legally separated from a spouse, and have custody, or joint custody of a minor child.  Homemakers must be adults who work, without payment, to care for the home and family.  Individuals interested in nontraditional careers are men or women who are interested in starting a career traditionally held by the opposite sex.  Women who are interested in becoming a machinist, electrician or drafter would be considered nontraditional as well as men interested in becoming a nurse, receptionist or accounting clerk.

The Success Skills Classes are free of charge.  Participants who complete these orientation and exploration classes will be encouraged to enter a second phase of the program, which includes enrolling as a student in one of Northeastern Technical College’s degree, diploma, or certificate earning programs.    Each participant will receive help in locating tuition assistance. Available assistance may include financial support in areas such as tuition, books, and possibly childcare and transportation for qualified students.  Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and attend all four evening classes in order to qualify for financial assistance through this type of special program.  Participants must also bring their 2005 income tax information to class for financial aid purposes.

Classes start on October 23 and last until October 26.   Classes will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm at NETC Cheraw in the auditorium.  Anyone interested in participating in this opportunity must register by 1:30 p.m. on October 20 or, show up on the first day of class which is October 23.  More information about the Success Skills Classes is available by contacting Teresa Rivers at (843) 921-6937, Sarah Margaret Therrell at (843) 921-6938.
