Welding And Sheet Metal Class Added to Second Spring Line Up

A welding and basic sheet metal class has been added to the list of Second Spring course offerings recently announced by Northeastern Technical College. Gas and Arc Welding (WLD 106), will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 1 pm on the Cheraw campus. Basic Sheet Metal (ACR 150), will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 pm at Chesterfield High School. The instructor of the sheet metal class will be John Hill. 

Students who take the welding course will learn the basic principles and practices of oxyacetylene welding, cutting, electric arc welding in addition to the fundamental positional welding and safety procedures. 

Students who take the sheet metal course will learn the tools and procedures required in basic sheet metal and the fabrication of ductwork.

According to the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of welding, soldering and brazing workers is expected to grow five percent annually over the next decade. Welders make between $10 and $22 per hour. 

The same handbook reports that job opportunities for sheet metal workers are expected to be good through 2016 especially in the construction and heating and air industries. Sheet metal workers typically make between $10 and $32 per hour. 

All Second Spring courses are 10-week sessions starting on February 18 and ending on May 2. 

New students submit applications for admission online by clicking on “Admissions” or by visiting one of the college campuses in Pageland, Cheraw, Bennettsville or Dillon. 

Current students should see their advisor to add the class.  There are no additional tuition charges to add a Second Spring class for students who are enrolled full time.
