Student Travel is Part of Education at NETC
A childcare facility in North Carolina, the University of South Carolina, Columbia College and Italy. These are just a few of the places that students are visiting as part of the education they are obtaining at Northeastern Technical College.
Students and alumni have a chance to visit Italy from June 8 – 22, 2008. The trip is being organized by Michael Flood, an English instructor at the college.
“Students involved in this experience will enhance their education at NETC by gaining a broader worldview,” said Flood. “Experiencing other cultures helps our students become more open-minded about other people and other ideas.”
The trip will be offered through EF Tours, the world’s largest private education company offering language learning, educational travel, cultural exchange and academic programming.
A tour director from EF Tours (EF stands for “Education First”), as well as a NETC faculty member, will be with the group from arrival to departure in the country. Students will fly into Milan and visit places including Venice, Florence, Assisi, Capri and Rome.
The trip is also being offered as a one-credit elective course. Total cost for the fifteen day “Italian Treasures” tour is $2974 which includes airfare, hotel, and meals. Lunch, along with public transportation and spending money for souvenirs is not included.
Any students or alumni interested should contact Michael Flood at 843-921-1453 or by email at mflood@netc.edu. Flood will guide all individuals through the preparation process, including obtaining a passport.
A group of students enrolled in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Program recently traveled to Anson Children’s Center in Polkton, N.C., to observe and experience how children with and without disabilities play and work together in the same environment.
While students were there to fulfill course requirements for ECD 107 Exceptional Children Course, Christy Smith, program coordinator and instructor, said the real world experience goes a long way in her student’s education.
“These students benefit because they see up close and on a personal level the handicaps of the children we’ve discussed in class,” she said. “Now they better understand and are better prepared to work with these children when they complete their education.”

Another group of students recently traveled to colleges in South Carolina as part of an annual college trip sponsored by Student Support Services. These students spent the afternoon and morning touring the University of South Carolina and Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., where they learned about admission processes, degree programs and life as a student at a four-year institution.
“These trips give the students we serve an opportunity to see what four-year colleges offer to meet their needs,” said Reese Bostic, student support service coordinator. “College visits also help our students to broaden their academic scope in hopes that they will inspired to transfer to a four year college or university.”
