Bookkeeping Certificate Begins Spring Semester at NETC
Bookkeepers looking for an advanced certification in their field, or anyone interested in a career in bookkeeping will have an opportunity to enhance their skills with Northeastern Technical College’s new Advanced Bookkeeping Certificate (ABC) program.
The ABC program includes two new course and six existing courses in areas such as accounting principles, accounting practices, payroll, and federal income tax and can be completed in one academic year, or three semesters. Courses will be offered this spring semester.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an Advanced Bookkeeping Certificate from the college and will be prepared to take the bookkeeping certification exam sponsored by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) to become a Certified Bookkeeper (CB).
“Anyone completing the program has the option of taking the exam, but success on the exam means students will achieve a nationally recognized credential to give them an edge in the job market or the potential for higher earnings,” said Sandra Barbour, vice president of instruction at the college.
A recent occupational outlook issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that demand for certified bookkeepers will increase as potential employees with bookkeeping skills are called upon to supplement the work of accountants. The same report shows that bookkeepers make between $18,580 and $43,570 annually.
Bookkeepers typically find work in a variety of office environments from small organizations to larger corporations and are generally responsible for maintaining the organization’s financial records.
The required courses for the Advanced Bookkeeping Certificate include: (all 3 credit hours)
ACC 101 Accounting Principles I (or ACC 111 and 112)
ACC 102 Accounting Principles II
ACC 116 Practical Accounting Applications I
ACC 117 Practical Accounting Applications II
ACC 120 Federal Income Tax
ACC 150 Payroll Accounting
BUS 140 Business Mathematics
CPT 174 Microcomputer Spreadsheets
New students may enroll in the program beginning this spring semester. Upon completion of the program, the earned credits can also be applied toward the requirements for the associate degree in business.
Alumni of NETC with the associate degree in business, or any graduates with a college degree may enroll in the certificate courses which they have not previously completed and earn the certificate.
Currently enrolled associate degree in business students may take Practical Accounting Applications I & II, which are the two new courses, to meet business elective requirements and ABC requirements.
