NETC Students Have Free Access to Workplace Preparedness Tool

Students enrolled at Northeastern Technical College have an opportunity to use a tool that can help them improve the marketability of their skills in the local, regional and national workforce.

KeyTrain, a comprehensive learning system for common skills required for employment, is available for free to any currently enrolled student at Northeastern Technical College.  Students sign up to use the training system through the college’s division of continuing education.

Upon completion of certain KeyTrain modules, students can then sign up to take WorkKeys assessments, which is a system used to measure, communicate and improve the common skills required for success in the workplace. Whereas WorkKey assessments helps employers identify potential employees who have the basic skills required to be successful in a given job, KeyTrain modules can help NETC students prepare for those test and employment positions.

For example, an employer may require a Level 3 score on an Applied Technology WorkKey before considering a student for employment.  The corresponding KeyTrain module can help students achieve this level of success through learning activities and assessments.  Other areas of KeyTrain and WorkKey assessments include reading, applied mathematics, locating information, applied technology, writing, listening observation and teamwork.

Students can also complete the WorkKey assessments in applied math, reading and locating information to earn a Career Readiness Certificate, another credential that can be valuable in finding a job.  Students pay around $15 to take each WorkKey assessment and the total cost invested to earn the Career Readiness Certificate is approximately $45.

Several employers in the area require WorkKey scores from applicants, said Sherrie Chapman, dean of continuing education at Northeastern Technical College, including WIX in Dillon County, INA in Chesterfield County and Mohawk in Marlboro County.

“All students have free access to KeyTrain at any of our campuses and all One Stops in our service area,” said Chapman.  “This is another value our college offers to students and it’s a great tool to help students quantify basic skill levels when they are promoting themselves to employers in our service area and beyond. “
