Sandra Barbour Retires As NETC Vice President
Sandra H. Barbour of Cheraw, who is retiring from Northeastern Technical College after more than 31 years of service, was recognized earlier this month at a luncheon held in her honor at the college.
Barbour joined what was then Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College in 1977 as dean of students. In 1979, she was appointed dean of instruction, and she became vice president for instruction in 1990. Barbour began her professional career as an English teacher in Boiling Springs, S.C., and before moving to NETC, she was director of federal Manpower programs at Spartanburg Technical College.
During her tenure at Northeastern Technical Colelge, Barbour led in the development of a variety of new programs and services, including a very successful apprenticeship program in Machine Tool Technology, a Practical Nursing program, and, most recently, an Associate Degree Nursing program. Under her leadership, the college began offering classes at various locations in Marlboro and Dillon Counties and new instructional delivery processes were developed, including distance learning and online instruction. Barbour has also been involved in developing dual credit and dual enrollment courses, as well as expanding apprenticeship programs to include a variety of employers.
“Northeastern Technical College has been a source of opportunity for this entire area -- for individuals, businesses and the overall economy,” she said. “All of the programs, services and activities at this college are designed to benefit students – and this in turn benefits the entire community. Through NETC, many students have developed confidence, skills and the desire to move ahead.”
“Sandra Barbour has been a devoted educator who dedicated a great deal of her life to Northeastern Technical College,” said NETC President Dr. Ron Bartley. “She has contributed a great deal to the college and has touched the lives of many students for whom NETC has been the pathway to a productive future. We appreciate all that she has done for the college.”
