Black History Program Speaker Delivers Message of Unity
The Rev. Malcolm L. Taylor Jr. delivered a rousing message about working together to make a difference during the Black History Month program held at Northeastern Technical College.
Taylor, pastor of Robinson A.M.E. Zion Church in Cheraw, was the keynote speaker for the program that included piano performances by NETC students Ashton McMillan and Daniel Garvin, both of Cheraw.
Leron Peterkin, dean of student services, provided the welcome and introduction of the speaker, and the Rev. Darin Coleman, support services coordinator, gave the invocation.
Taylor spoke about “front porch” lessons he learned from his grandmother and other family and friends who used to gather at this social site to share in the work of shelling peas and spreading fellowship.
“The front porch was the stage for community,” Taylor said. “It was about learning how to work together because working together does work.”
The theme for the program was “United for Change: Working together to make a difference,” and the crowd stood as one to applaud Taylor for his encouraging words of unity among races, cultures and social classes.
