Practical nursing students from Northeastern Technical College visited Ruby Elementary School to deliver a healthy dose of good hygiene habits to kindergarten and first-grade classes. The NETC students also talked about nutrition, exercise and courteous manners.

Nursing Class Teaches Good Hygiene, Good Health and Good Manners

Do you think you have clean hands after a quick hand washing? Think again.

Licensed Practical Nursing students from Northeastern Technical College showed first-graders at Ruby Elementary School otherwise using a black light that revealed the “germy” areas of their hands if they did not scrub well or long enough.

“You need to wash your hands for two minutes,” practical nursing student Chrystal Blanton of Cheraw said. “How long is two minutes? The amount of time it takes to sing the alphabet song twice.”

Four groups of practical nursing students talked to kindergarten and first-grade classes about good hygiene habits as well as making healthy choices, such as playing active games versus watching television and eating fruits and veggies versus candy and fast food.
Dressed as the tooth fairy, practical nursing student Marlena Bratsos of Chesterfield also talked about the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing regularly, while practical nursing student Victoria Warren of Bennettsville reminded the children that they should always be courteous by saying  “please” and “thank you.”

NETC nursing instructors Cheryl Douglass and Pam King accompanied the practical nursing students to Ruby Elementary.
