NETC Students To Show Support for Lottery Funding Program

Students and staff from Northeastern Technical College will join hundreds of other students from the South Carolina Technical College system at the State House in Columbia on January 24 to show support and appreciation of the Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) program.

The LTA program was created by the General Assembly in 2002 for public two-year institutions. Unlike merit-based lottery-funded aid, award amounts are not guaranteed from semester to semester, and fluctuate based on lottery collections and student demand.

Nearly 285,000 technical college students have benefitted from the LTA program since its inception.

Student demand across the South Carolina Technical College System is growing as most colleges are seeing enrollment numbers increase. Northeastern Technical College experienced a record-setting enrollment in fall 2010 with more than 1,200 students enrolled in college credit programming. Student enrollment at NETC was equally as high in fall 2011.

The rally on the Statehouse grounds will include speeches from Dr. Darrel W. Staat, president of the South Carolina Technical College System, state legislators and education leaders.

Any NETC student who is a recipient of LTA funding and would like to participate in the rally should contact Leron Peterkin, dean of Student Services, at (843) 921-6936, or e-mail lpeterkin@netc.edu.
