Cosmetologist Betters Her Business Skills Through NETC

Alanda LeGrand, of Hamer, has a passion for doing hair. She owns Alanda’s Beauty Salon on Main Street in Dillon, and she teaches cosmetology at the Dillon County Technology Center in Dillon.

Despite her obvious talent as a beautician, LeGrand wanted to better her skills for making wise business decisions for her hair salon, so she enrolled in the Associate of Business degree program at Northeastern Technical College in Dillon.

“When NETC built the community campus in Dillon, it was easier for me to go to college while also running my hair salon,” LeGrand said. “It was tough juggling work and school, but I did it and graduated in December 2005 with my associates degree.”

LeGrand is a graduate of Latta High School and Chris Logan cosmetology school.  She opened her hair salon in 1992 and has been in business ever since. In June 2007, she earned her teaching certification in cosmetology and was hired by the Dillon County Technology Center as a cosmetology instructor.

“I tell my students all the time that they need to pursue an associates degree and not just rely on the cosmetology certificate,” LeGrand said. “A two-year degree can be their pathway to another job if they do not find success doing hair. For me, NETC was my pathway to an associates degree in business, which helped me be a better business owner.”

While LeGrand already has her plate full teaching classes in the morning and working at her hair salon in the afternoons, she hasn’t ruled out furthering her education.

“Because I already earned my associates degree through NETC, I’m halfway to a bachelor’s degree if I choose to go back to school,” she said.
