Compass Point expands to include both 3k and 4k programs

Northeastern Technical College's Compass Point program has expanded and is now offering three-year-old classroom with a new 3k curriculum. By offering both 3K and 4K services, Compass Point will help address the county's lack of affordable child care, and build children's school readiness skills for two full years prior to kindergarten.
Compass Point opened in 2018 as a collaborative effort between NETC and Chesterfield County First Steps (CCFS) to provide quality care and first-rate education to help children prepare and transition into kindergarten. Recently, NETC received $120,000 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education for the Child Care Access Means Parents in Schools (CCAMPIS) grant program to help expand the program and implement an on-site 3k program. Chesterfield County First Steps received an Early Childhood Initiative grant to purchase the 3K classroom furnishings and learning materials.
Compass Point 3K and 4K classes are open to all children of appropriate age with children of NETC students given first priority. Most families are eligible for free or reduced tuition through NETC's CCAMPIS grant, ABC Quality subsidies or First Steps 4K plus siblings. The younger siblings of children enrolled in the First Steps 4K program are eligible for free child care through the 4K plus-siblings program.
Compass Point year round early education and care provided by degreed early education teachers providing high educational standards in an innovative academic setting. The program will also be presented in a laboratory school environment, with students from NETC's early childhood education assisting degreed teachers and certified instructors to gain first-hand experience. Compass Point is one of the few 4K programs offered in a lab school environment in the state.
To participate in the Compass Point programs, children must be three or four years of age on or before September 1, 2022; be eligible for free or free/reduced lunch or Medicaid; and live in one of the 64 eligible school districts. State funded tuition is available for those who qualify, and the private rate for tuition will be $100 per week.
