High school students from Chesterfield, Marlboro and Dillon counties are gaining a "competitive edge" through Northeastern Technical College's (NETC) Dual Enrollment program, which provides students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

More than 130 high school students enrolled in more than 300 courses during NETC's fall semester registration this year, meaning that nearly 839 college credits will be earned this semester by local high school students.

"The dual enrollment and dual credit courses provide students the opportunity to get a head start on college requirements in their junior and senior years of high school," said Valerie Gargiulo, NETC's dual enrollment coordinator.  "This allows them to earn college credit early and at a lower cost, and also helps them to understand what it takes to be college prepared while learning skills that are vital to college success."

The dual enrollment/credit curriculum at NETC offers many general education college courses which transfer to public institutions of higher education in SC and many other colleges and universities in the United States.  Some of the course offerings at NETC include English Composition, American Government, General Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, College Algebra, Elementary Calculus, Music Appreciation, Art History & Appreciation, Introduction to Theatre, Accounting, Economics and Western Civilization.

"Another benefit for students and parents taking advantage of the dual enrollment program is that it can save a family thousands of dollars in college tuition," said Gargiulo.  "We are offering the same general education college courses that four-year universities and colleges do, for much less."

The dual credit program gives students who have mastered or nearly mastered the high school curriculum an additional advantage by allowing them to simultaneously earn high school units towards graduation and college credits.  With dual credit, college grades are converted to equivalent grades with AP weight for reporting to the high school.

"We've had students really take advantage of the dual credit program in the past, and use it as a way to improve their high school grade point averages," said Gargiulo.  "Many of the past valedictorians and salutatorians in Chesterfield, Marlboro and Dillon counties have been dual enrollment/dual credit students here at NETC."

Gargiulo also stated that dual enrollment courses are not only for academically gifted students, but any junior or senior who is in good standing, doing well in high school, and ready for college-level work.  Students must have the permission of their high school.

The NETC application fee is waived for high school students.  Students who take six credit hours a semester may qualify for Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA).

Students and parents who are interested in the dual enrollment/dual credit program at NETC should speak to their high school guidance counselor, or call Valerie Gargiulo, dual enrollment coordinator, at 843-921-6995.  Additional information about tuition and class information is available online at www.netc.edu.
