It’s A Family Thing

Rebecca Lindsey is currently enrolled at Northeastern Technical College (NETC), participating in the Schaeffler Group Apprenticeship Program. Her father, Theodore Lindsey, was a part of the first apprenticeship offered by NETC and the Schaeffler Group when it started back in March 1988.

The majority of Rebecca's work experience was in retail, successfully managing department stores. With a growing family, she desired to enter a career that was more stable and could offer her long term growth opportunities. She consulted her father about what her next steps should be.

Her father has long been an advocate for learning a trade. "It helps you gain skills that no one can ever take away from you," he said. "Everyone cannot go to a 4-Year University. They should consider different avenues, and a technical path is a great option."

He strongly encouraged Rebecca to consider the Schaeffler Apprenticeship Program at NETC. Reflecting on his experience with the program, he knew it would not be easy, but the hard work would pay off.

Becoming a Schaeffler Apprentice opened doors for Theodore to see the world. After completing the apprenticeship, he started working in the tool room. Seventeen years later, he is a Grinding Technologist, serving as a corporate liaison for the company. Theodore lived in Germany for 18 months training at the corporate headquarters located there. He is fluent in German and regularly communicates with the home office. In his role, he has traveled to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and various parts of the United States.

Theodore served on the first alumni board at NETC. He also taught Machine Tool courses at NETC as an instructor. "I never thought the apprenticeship would have matured into all of this," he said.
When Schaeffler announced they were accepting applications for the apprenticeship, Rebecca was reluctant to apply because she had no manufacturing experience. Motivated by everything her father accomplished in his career, she applied and was accepted. "When people talk about the program, my dad's name always comes up," she said. "I have big shoes to fill, but I look forward to exceeding those expectations."

Graduating in December, Rebecca is a few months away from completing her apprenticeship. Rebecca is learning how to "heat treat" in a new specialized apprenticeship offered from Schaeffler. It is physically demanding, very hot, and there is not a lot of women doing it. Rebecca is leaving her mark in the industry by showing women they can be successful in a world normally dominated by males.

As Rebecca and her Father shared stories, they realized not much is different about their experiences at NETC. They agree the course work is similar, and the atmosphere on campus is student-focused. Students receive the support they need to be successful.

Rebecca's daughter, Addison, is enrolled at the Compass Point 4k at NETC. Compass Point 4K is a collaborative effort between NETC and Chesterfield County First Steps to provide quality care and education to help children prepare and transition into kindergarten. Having her daughter on the same campus has been helpful, and another example of how NETC provides resources to help students achieve success. She plans to enroll her two-year-old son, Noah, in the program when the time comes.
Someday, Rebecca hopes one of her children will enter the Schaeffler Apprenticeship Program at NETC- it's a family thing.

NETC and The Schaeffler Group started this partnership to strategically and systematically equip students with technical and personal skills to become competent employees. Thirty-one years later, they are still offering this great opportunity. The partnership is stronger than ever.
