Northeastern Technical College graduated its fifth class from the Associate Degree in Nursing program on Friday, May 10, in Cheraw.

After 21 months of intensive studying and clinical rotations, the 23 men and women graduating from the program, as well as their families, were ready to celebrate this significant milestone on the pathway to a noble career in the nursing profession.

"This is a proud moment for this group who made it through the rigorous Associate Degree of Nursing program," Dr. Ron Bartley, college president, said. "The people who supported these graduates along the way also deserve a round of applause."

The nursing program prepares students to take the National Council of Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) in order to become fully licensed registered nurses (RN).

"Nurses are not made overnight," Vicky Craig, nursing instructor and head of NETC's nursing department, said. "They are born with certain attributes that are watered and grown and mentored until they blossom into a nurse. A true nurse considers others first at all cost, sometimes to a fault, but caring for that patient holistically is what is instilled deep within them."

The nursing class selected Craig to be the guest speaker for the pinning ceremony.

"To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world," Craig said, citing a personal favorite quote. "Always do what is ethically and morally right and you will always succeed in life."

Craig, who earned her Associate Degree in Nursing in 2006 and is now working on her post-graduate certificate for Family Nurse Practitioner, encouraged the graduates to also pursue professional growth.

"I want to challenge each student today to continue to move forward in your nursing profession," Craig said. "Over the last few decades, opportunities for nurses have blossomed, allowing nurses to provide a new resource to the world: a highly educated nurse who leads the way in evidence based practices."

Nursing instructor Nancy White presented two graduates with achievement awards. Stacy Stewart of Monroe, N.C., received the Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance. Stephanie Dundy of Florence received the Award for Registered Nursing Academic Excellence.

Class of 2013 President Sam Patterson of Cheraw presented words of congratulations and encouragement to his fellow classmates in the nursing program.

Each graduate of the nursing program wore a nursing cap and received a pin and symbolic lamp, which was then lit as graduates recited the Nightingale Pledge in memory of pioneer of modern nursing Florence Nightingale. Class Vice President Michelle Luck of Cheraw explained the significance of these three symbols of nursing: the cap symbolizes service to those in need; the nursing pin symbolizes medical care for the wounded and sick; and the lighted lamp symbolizes the continued search for knowledge and enlightenment.

The ceremony concluded with Bartley officially presenting the Associate Degree in Nursing Class of 2013 to the audience.

Nursing graduates include: Subrata Alford of Dillon, Renee Barry of Latta, Harold Wilson Boan III of Cheraw, Ronika Bostic of Clio, Alice Bowe Chavious of Cheraw, Jennifer Cox of Hamer, Katasha Deschamps of Mayesville, Mica Dowdy of Bennettsville, Stephanie Dundy of Florence, Cassandra Green of Darlington, Whitney Hancock of Mt.
