A delegation from Northeastern Technical College attended the National Legislative Summit, held February 6-10, in Washington, DC. The National Legislative Summit is the premier community college advocacy event bringing community college leaders from across the United States to D.C. The event shines a spotlight on the importance of our nation's community colleges, student success, and education priorities for Congress and the Administration.
Speakers at this year's summit included First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Dr. Miguel Cardona, US Secretary of Education, and Martin J. Walsh, US Secretary of Labor. NETC Representatives included Area Commission Chairman Dan Bozard, President Dr. Kyle Wagner, Vice President of Institutional Advancement Erin Fann, and Development Coordinator Andy Ingram.
While in Washington, the group had the opportunity to network with fellow community college leaders and meet with U.S. representatives in Congress to advocate for their support for community colleges and their students. NETC met with elected officials from the offices of Senator Tim Scott, Senator Lindsey Graham, Representative Tom Rice, Representative Joe Wilson, and Congressman Jim Clyburn. Other meetings were held with Dr. Michelle Cooper, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education, Career and Technical Education staff at the U.S. Department of Education, and staff from the Senate HELP Committee and House Appropriations Committee.
NETC's agenda included discussions on extending the Dual Enrollment Experimental Pell program and sharing the program's success throughout Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Dillon counties. Other talks included future programming, funding opportunities, and the importance of having solid and well-funded colleges located in rural communities.
