Riechers named NETC Vice President of Academic Affairs

The robots aren't likely to be taking over, but somebody needs to operate them!

Entering in his new role as Northeastern Technical Colleges Vice President of Academic Affairs in March, Dr. Derk Riechers, will continue moving NETC towards a technology advance future to include embracing artificial intelligence.

"A.I. is not a fad," Dr. Riechers, said.

Just like the Internet changed everything from worldwide communication and commerce, artificial intelligence will be a part of our lives as well.

"The mission of a technical college is to prepare and train students for the current and future workforce," Dr. Riechers said. "A.I. is a general technological advancement. The jobs will still be there, but the skillsets are changing."

One of the roles Vice President of Academic Affairs plays at a technical college is developing academic programs meeting accreditation standards and the needs of the service areas – this includes keeping in regular contact with local industries meeting their training and education demands.

"With the advent of AI, every profession is using a computer and likely will be equipped with it. Our goal is to shape the future of Northeastern Technical College moving forward with our curriculum with the changes in this technology," Dr. Riechers said.

Dr. Riechers has been instrumental in modernizing Northeastern Technical College's Online Learning Management System since coming on board in 2018.

Dr. Riechers previously served as NETC's Online College Director which instituted Desire 2 Learn (D2L) creating online classrooms, which kept the school operational during the Covid 19 shutdowns.

"Having our classes online made an impact for our students in a time when they needed the least amount of disruption," Dr. Riechers said.

Dr. Riechers is a nationally recognized academic, with his research interesting focusing on technology and the operations of academic affairs.

This recognition is underscored by his invitations to present at over 100 national conferences to a variety of audiences and the various boards he serves on by his volunteering his time throughout the academic space.

Dr. Riechers expressed enthusiasm for NETC's trajectory under the leadership of its President, Dr. Kyle Wagner.

He emphasized the honor he feels in serving the public and working at NETC as Dr. Wagner has significantly propelled NETC forward during his continued tenure.

In November 2023, Riechers earned a Doctorate in Education Specializing in Higher Education: Teaching and Learning from Brenau University in Georgia.

Previously, Riechers earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in Business Economics from Francis Marion University; Master's Degree of Science in Management and Leadership and Human Resources Development from Webster University; Master's Degree in Business Administration and a Post-Masters Teaching Certificate from Capella University; and an Instructional Leadership Certificate from Harvard University from its Graduate School of Education
