USDA Funds NETC Expansion of Education & Health Care Access in Rural Communities

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Donald "DJ" LaVoy announced that USDA is investing $42.5 million in 133 distance learning and telemedicine projects in 37 states and two U.S. territories.

Northeastern Technical College (NETC) received close to a million dollars in Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants. The award marks NETC's third year being funded by the USDA, for a total of six RUS Awards received by the college.

NETC Allied Health Program received $499,994 to implement an emergency services expansion project. The project will serve 350 first responders in ten fire and rescue departments in Chesterfield, Dillon, and Marlboro counties. Students will take courses at Dillon A-Tech School, Marlboro County High School, and Central High School. This project will increase rural access to improved educational opportunities, benefiting up to 20,030 residents, including first responders.

NETC Advanced Manufacturing Program received $499,997 to implement a distance learning project. Students will receive science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) based technical training at the Dillon Inland Port. NETC will place distance learning equipment in Chesterfield, Dillon, and Marlboro counties. An estimated 2,212 residents will receive improved educational opportunities.

"We are excited that the USDA awarded our service area with such an impactful grant," said Dr. Kyle Wagner, NETC President. "We plan to use the funding to continue expanding distance learning opportunities, so that everyone, regardless of where they live, can have access to quality education."

USDA is providing this funding through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program. These investments will benefit 5.4 million rural residents nationwide.

"Distance learning and telemedicine make it easier for thousands of rural residents to take advantage of economic, health care, and educational opportunities without having to travel long distances," LaVoy said. "Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA is committed to partnering with rural communities to help them improve their quality of life because when rural America thrives, all of America thrives."

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements, business development, housing, community facilities (schools, public safety, and health care), and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
